Read his statement below STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE PRESIDENT BUHARI EXPLAINS REORGANIZATION AT THE PRESIDENCY President Muhammadu Buhari has explained that the ongoing reorganization at the presidency is aimed at enhancing service delivery to Nigerians. Fielding questions from State House Correspondents at the Presidential Wing of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, shortly after his arrival from London on Friday night, President Buhari said it is unfortunate that the recent disengagement of some political appointees from the presidency had been given ‘‘ethnic and political’’ interpretations. ‘‘They said 35 people were sacked in the Vice...

THE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT THAT WILL IMPROVE THE FACE NIGERIA DEMOCRACY

Image
CONSTITUTIONAL REVIEW TO STRENGTHEN THE ROLE OF THE OFFICE OF THE VICE PRESIDENT (OVP) Upon reading the Nigerian constitution, one realizes that the President is overburdened without adequate support from his Vice President based on their constitutional roles. A review of the constitutional powers accorded Nigeria’s Vice President who is the second-in-command as elected alongside the President in national elections indicate that they are often rendered as “spare tyres”. These executive functions currently include; participation in all cabinet meetings, membership in the National Security Council, the National Defence Council, Federal Executive Council, and the Chairman of National Economic Council.   These functions are still limited due to the President’s relatively humongous powers as accorded by the constitution. It is a prerogative, now more than never that the Nigerian national assembly attends to the review of the 1999 constitution as a life wire for the purpo...

CLOSING THE INEQUALITIES GAP TO ACHIEVE SOCIAL JUSTICE

Social justice is an underlying principle for peaceful and prosperous coexistence within and among nations. We uphold the principles of social justice when we promote gender equality, or the rights of indigenous peoples and migrants. We advance social justice when we remove barriers that people face because of gender, age, race, ethnicity, religion, culture or disability. For the United Nations, the pursuit of social justice for all is at the core of our global mission to promote development and human dignity. The adoption by the International Labour Organization of the Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalization is just one recent example of the UN System’s commitment to social justice. The Declaration focuses on guaranteeing fair outcomes for all, through employment, social protection, social dialogue, and fundamental principles and rights at work. A FEW FACTS Employment growth since 2008 has averaged only 0.1% annually, compared with 0.9% between 2000 and 2007. Over...

MICRO, SMALL, AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISES: A POSITIVE CHANGE IN ATTITUDE WILL RECREATE WEALTH

Image
Clothing is as old as man himself, the very first clothing that served as a covering was made by the best designer, God. Ever since creation, man has always required the services of a tailor for a covering, but sad to say many Nigeria indigenous tailors have failed to utilize that business opportunity. Needle and thread over the year has changed lives and continues to do so till date. Let’s use a tailor who sews Ankara for instance, he/she can use only needle and thread to produce a style that cost at least N2,000.00 for a up and down and this may take just 2 hours to finish. Imagine, if they tailor gives himself the target to finish up to 4 pairs daily that means N8,000.00, multipled it by 5 (five) that is N40,000.00 weekly, if  that amount is multiplied by 4 weeks in a mouth that will sum up to N240,000.00 a month. It is very essential to note that these figures do not come by simply calculating it, but it is as a result of having the right attitude and approach towards the j...

HISTORY OF THE RADIO: FROM INCEPTION TO MODERN DAY

Image
In modern society, radios are common technology in the car and in the home. In fact, in today's world one would be hard pressed to find anyone who has not heard of, seen, or used a radio during his or her life, regardless of how old or young they may be. This was not always the case, however. Before the 19th century, wireless radio communication in everyday life was a thing of fantasy. Even after the development of the radio in the late 1800s, it took many years before radios went mainstream and became a household fixture. The history of the radio is a fascinating one that changed how the world connected and communicated from distances both far and near. While the radio enjoys a long and interesting history, its earliest beginnings are still quite controversial. There's some debate as to who actually invented the radio. While we may not know with certainty who put together the first radio device, we do know that in 1893 the inventor Nikolai Tesla demonstrated a wireles...

WRD: WORLD RADIO DAY

Image
Proclaimed in 2011 by the Member States of UNESCO, and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as an International Day, February 13 became World Radio Day (WRD). Radio is a powerful medium for celebrating humanity in all its diversity and constitutes a platform for democratic discourse. At the global level, radio remains the most widely consumed medium. This unique ability to reach out the widest audience means radio can shape a society’s experience of diversity, stand as an arena for all voices to speak out, be represented and heard. Radio stations should serve diverse communities, offering a wide variety of programs, viewpoints and content, and reflect the diversity of audiences in their organizations and operations.

THE SMALLEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD

Image
It may be difficult to imagine, but there is a country in the world smaller than New York City’s Central Park and one with a population smaller than a typical high-school class. Based on landmass, Vatican City is the smallest country in the world, measuring just 0.2 square miles, almost 120 times smaller than the island of Manhattan. Situated on the western bank of the Tiber River, Vatican City’s 2-mile border is landlocked by Italy. The official seat of the pope of the Catholic Church since 1377, Vatican City was not declared an independent state until the Lateran Treaty of 1929. After years of power struggles between popes and the political leaders of Italy over who could claim supreme authority in the region, Benito Mussolini and Pope Pius XI agreed to the Lateran Pacts on February 11, 1929, which created the independent state of Vatican City for the Catholic Church in exchange for the pope’s recognition of the Kingdom of Italy. Today, nearly 75 percent of the Vatican’s citizens ar...

GOVERNANCE: THE GRASSROOTS’ MUST BE RESPONSIBLE

Times without number the lack of understanding of governance and hierarchy make us leave the government closer to us unaccountable. Going forward, the Local Government Authorities must not be allowed to remain behind the scenes hence lose their importance in this country. Since constitutional powers to govern the affairs of their immediate localities rest on them, it is probably time we cut the Federal Government some slack and hold the powers at every level accountable, most especially Local Government Authority (LGA) to know what becomes of the 35% benefit allocated to them from the new Value Added Tax (VAT) rate (with effect from February 1, 2020). The sharing formula of the new Value Added Tax (VAT) out of 100%, the federal government takes only 15%, while the Local Government Authority receives 35% and the state government goes with 50%. It is high time we monitored the LGA compliance with the rules described in the financial regulations governing cash receipts. We cannot co...

Evers was gunned down in the driveway of his Jackson, Mississippi, home on June 12, 1963, while his wife, Myrlie, and the couple’s three small children were inside. Medgar Wiley Evers was born July 2, 1925, near Decatur, Mississippi, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After fighting for his country, he returned home to experience discrimination in the racially divided South, with its separate public facilities and services for blacks and whites. Evers graduated from Alcorn College in 1952 and began organizing local chapters of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). In 1954, after being rejected for admission to then-segregated University of Mississippi Law School, he became part of an NAACP campaign to desegregate the school. Later that year, Evers was name...

TODAY IN HISTORY: PATTY HEARST KIDNAPPED BY THE SYMBIONESE LIBERATION ARMY

On February 4, 1974, Patty Hearst, the 19-year-old granddaughter of newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst, is kidnapped from her apartment in Berkeley, California, by three armed strangers. Her fiancee, Stephen Weed, was beaten and tied up along with a neighbor who tried to help. Witnesses reported seeing a struggling Hearst being carried away blindfolded, and she was put in the trunk of a car. Neighbors who came out into the street were forced to take cover after the kidnappers fired their guns to cover their escape. Three days later, the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA), a small U.S. leftist group, announced in a letter to a Berkeley radio station that it was holding Hearst as a “prisoner of war.” Four days later, the SLA demanded that the Hearst family give $70 in foodstuffs to every needy person from Santa Rosa to Los Angeles. This done, said the SLA, negotiation would begin for the return of Patricia Hearst. Randolph Hearst hesitantly gave away some $2 million worth of...
