Why a Muslim-Muslim ticket is still a no-no
Ahead of the 2023 general elections, there has been speculation that one of the leading candidate of the All Progressives Congress and former Governor of Lagos may be planning a Muslim-Muslim ticket.
Although, it is not clear yet since the the ruling party is yet to host its primary election. The election will reveal its running mate.
This is against the tradition that has been long upheld in Nigeria's political radar where the President and vice are always of different faith to create a balance.
A lot of political pundits have argued that the criterion for electing leaders shouldn't be by religion but by competency. This means that, whether the president and running mate be of the same faith, it shouldn't be an issue but the focus should be how qualified they are.
On the other hand, many believe that Nigeria is a multiethnic and largely a dual religious country where people of both faith should represent the two top leadership positions in the country.
President Muhammadu Buhari in 2014 rightly rejected a Muslim-Muslim ticket and I think he should again but even of more sensitivity is that a Christian should be Nigeria's next President.
Having had eight years of President Buhari as president, the proper thing is to have a Christian succeed him.
