28 MILLIONS OF BANK CUSTOMERS HAVE NO CREDIT HISTORY

The Central Bank of Nigeria ( CBN ) has said that 28 million bank customers have never received loans from their banks. Deputy Governor, Financial System Stability Directorate, CBN, Aisha Ahmad, said this while speaking at the 4th National Fintech Conference, in Lagos. Lamenting the huge financial access gap in the country especially in terms of access to credit, she said: “Out of 40 million Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs) and about 12 million have credit history and that gap is to be looked at. “Yes, 63.2 per cent of Nigerians are financially included but financial inclusion is not inclusion itself it is about also expanding access within those that are included.” Stressing the need for innovation in bridging the financial inclusion gap especially access to credit gap, Ahmad called on banks and fintechs to pursue responsible innovation which promotes inclusion in the financial industry. “Firstly, responsible innovation, it must be inclusive, to address all our issues on f...

WHY NIGERIA MOVED UP 15 PLACES IN THE EASE OF DOING BUSINESS RANKING

Never liked Mourinho, (yes, I’m an Arsenal fan) but it’s from him I took one of the most profound quotes that we should all apply in our lives as Nigerians. “The dog barks but the caravan moves on” Detractors will have you continuously believe that the economy is not improving or that the climate is not prime for entrepreneurial development but this recognition alongside all the recent pronouncements by the World Bank and the United Nations on the success of the NSIPs shows that it’s actually our scepticism that’s holding us all back from exploring all the policies being put in place by this administration. The question Nigerians should be asking is why have we climbed up the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business 2020? What are the things we are doing right and how could we possibly improve. World Bank used 12 areas of business regulation to measure countries globally and they are, starting a business; dealing with construction permits; getting electricity; registering property; ge...

GROUP INVESTMENT, HUGE RETURNS

Let me put a proper perspective to the  @retsonbiz   @NGFarmersGroup  existential and sucess story. The NFGCS, which is the acronym for Nigeria Farmer's Group and Cooperative Society was registered as a cooperative in early 2017. A litte over 2 and half years ago. provided the sum of N1,500,000 ONLY as a take off loan. It was and remains the only loan we have ever granted a new business entity without any proven revenue model. As the NFGCS leased land and began preparation for farming, membership subscription happened simultaneously. Within about 3 months, membership in the cooperative had surpassed 300, and crowdfunding/contribution/subscription to cultivate maize, which was the first crop to be cultivated had topped N100m. The first year of farming season was a success despite earthworm challenges. Membership of the cooperative increased after the first farming season, and so did subscription to cultivate variety of crops increase. The farm diversified crop cul...

ARE YOU A GRADUATE WITHOUT SKILLS

By Seun Bisuga The 2018 Graduate Skills ranking by the World Economic Forum, placed Nigeria on 135 out of 140 countries, this simply shows that most Nigerian graduates don’t have the requisite skills, experience and knowledge for the dream job that they crave, even worse, is the fact that most of them are not professionally aware of the sector they seek to work in. Personally, I have had firsthand experience with many Nigerian graduates in the last two years, interviewing them and also asking basic questions but the answers I get are rather fascinating. They appear to have little knowledge of the main course they studied in school and very little of what policies and programmes are happening around them. Hence, the cliché that Nigerian graduates are “unemployable” is sometimes apt, when you see graduates who cannot write proper English or even speak; you sometimes wonder how they graduated. I understand that no one is a master of both written and spoken English but everyone is e...

10 FACTS CONDITIONAL CASH TRANSFER (CCT)

Some Nigerians have argued that the $322.5m General Sani Abacha loot recovered from the Swiss government by the Buhari administration could have been used for other infrastructural projects instead of sharing N5000 each to 400,000 poor households over a period of time. BUT HERE ARE THE REASONS WHY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OF NIGERIA COULD NOT HAVE DONE OTHERWISE. 1.       The Swiss court ruled that the Abacha loot will only be returned to Nigeria if Nigeria nominates a project that is aimed at alleviating poverty. 2.       The Swiss Court ordered the commencement of repatriation of Abacha loot on the condition that the World Bank would supervise utilization to prevent mismanagement and re-looting. 3.       Nigeria had to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Swiss government and the network of Civil Societies (CSOs). 4.       The Swiss court rejected Fast Power P...
