The Nigerian national team is blessed with raw talents and players that have graced the national and earned themselves legendary status.

Here we take a look at some Nigerian players who contributed immensely to the progress of their fatherland before going to the journey of no return.

1. Rashidi Yekini
Born on October 23, 1963, the late goal banger was the first player to have scored the first ever goal for Nigeria in a FIFA World Cup match on June 21 1994 in Dallas, USA.

Till today, Rashidi Yekini who represented Nigeria in five major tournaments including two World Cup is still Nigeria's all time leading scorer with 37 goals; the legend died on May 4, 2012 at the age of 49.

2. Stephen Keshi
Born on January 23, 1962, the 'Big Boss' is the only player to have won the African Nations Cup as a player and as a coach.

The lanky Keshi was a defender during his playing days and he featured for clubs in Africa and Europe.

Keshi would ever be remembered by many Nigerians after steering the Super Eagles to win the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, as his side defeated Burkina Faso 1-0 in the final. He died on June 8, 2016 in Benin City.

3. Samuel Okwaraji
The player collapsed and died of congestive heart failure in the 77th minute of a World Cup qualification match against Angola at the Lagos national stadium on August 12, 1989.

Samuel Okwaraji was born on May 19 1964, and he was a professional footballer who played internationally for Nigeria during his playing days.

His death still remain fresh in the memory of many Nigerians as he was reported to be the only child of his parent.

4. Teslim Balogun
Popularly known for his thunderous shot in which many goalkeepers would not want to attempt, Teslim Balogun was born in 1927.

He featured for Nigeria for 12 years as a striker. He also played for several local clubs before moving to England where he played for Queens Park Rangers (QPR).

He died on July 30, 1972.
