BUHARI, OSINBAJO ALWAYS IN TANDEM

President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo In a scene that clearly discredits attempts to sow discord between President Muhammadu Buahri and his deputy, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo a video clip recently released by the Presidency shows that the mutual respect between them is on the rise rather than worsening. In the video tweeted by Tolu Ogunlesi, the Special Assistant to President on New Media and Head of Digital Communication, the President after his birthday celebration on 17 December said he was going to see the Vice President off while others could find their way. Along with the video, Mr Ogunlesi, wrote what the President said. “I will see you off. The rest can make their way.” President Buhari bants with the VP after a private birthday dinner at home, attended by associates and senior government officials. In the video, one will see that as the two began to walk, the Vice President beckoned on the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Must...

HOW REASONABLE IS THE FIRS 90BN/40BN ALLEGATION?

Apparently this has been on for a while, I just heard about it and it only took me about 20 seconds to spot a number of holes in this story started by former APC spokesman Timi Frank, accusing Osinbajo and the FIRS of misappropriation of money meant for the latter to fund the 2019 elections. Firstly, the incongruities in the stories being reported by the media are conspicuous. With some of them putting the figure at N90bn and others claiming N40bn, which one are we to believe? Also, how does the FIRS fund a campaign with N90 billion when in its past four years of operations the agency has not received up to N100 billion in any year as Cost of Collection from the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee, FAAC? How can they simply afford it? Bear in mind that it is from this remittance that the agency pays salaries and trains over 8000 members of staff. It is from the same pocket they run their over 150 offices nationwide. Furthermore I know from the long years a close friend worke...

HUMAN RIGHTS CELEBRATION

2019 Theme: Youth Standing Up for Human Rights After a year marked by the 30th anniversary celebrations of the  Convention on the Rights of the Child , which culminated on 20 November, 2019, our plan is to capitalise on the current momentum and spotlight the leadership role of youth in collective movements as a source of inspiration for a better future. Under our universal call to action "Stand Up for Human rights," we aim to celebrate the potential of youth as constructive agents of change, amplify their voices, and engage a broad range of global audiences in the promotion and protection of rights. The campaign, led by the  Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights  (OHCHR), is designed to encourage, galvanise, and showcase how youth all over the world stand up for rights and against racism, hate speech, bullying, discrimination, and climate change, to name a few. WHY YOUTH? YOUTH PARTICIPATION IS ESSENTIAL TO ACHIEVE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT FOR AL...

7 TIPS FOR GIVING A KILLER SPEECH

William Shakespeare once told us, “Brevity is the soul of wit.” The always colorful Dorothy Parker adapted Shakespeare’s aphorism and taught us that “brevity is the soul of lingerie.” My humble contribution to the power of getting to the point is that “brevity is essential in public speaking.” Whether you’re talking about the length of a speech or the number of points you plan to cover, one of the most important qualities of an effective speech is that it’s relatively short. As proof, think about Abraham Lincoln’s "Gettysburg Address" and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Both are powerful and brief. But a speech’s length is only one factor you need to consider when you’re preparing to give a speech at an event. Here are some other techniques you can use to make your speech memorable. 1. Deliver a performance, rather than a speech.  A speech is primarily about the words that you speak, but a performance is so much more. It’s inflection, gesture,...

NIGERIANS MISPLACED PRIORITIES

Sowore, DSS fiasco and Nigeria's misplaced priorities. Days ago,  Nigeria’s democracy set back by a decade at least. The unnecessary re-arrest of Omoyele Sowore by the Department of State Services (DSS) within a court premise was horrific to the eyes. The action put Nigeria on the global map for many wrong reasons. But what bothers me is the fact that Nigerians took to social media to blame the President and Vice President for the actions of the DSS, they barely blamed the DSS in the manner that they should. Nigerians must learn to channel their misgivings and grievances through the right channels. Osinbajo is a Prof of Law and a SAN does not make him a judge or the DSS DG, Nigerians should note this. Let me remind us of a few things he did when he had the powers. As Acting President, Prof. Osinbajo on 7 August 2018, Osinbajo fired the State Security Service boss, Lawal Daura for illegal invasion of National Assembly by armed and masked operatives of the department. Daura...

WILLING SELLER, WILLING BUYER

The Federal Ministry of Power is is to introduce a new Electricity distribution policy called "willing Seller, Willing Buyer". Under the new differential Power distribution policy, electricity would be wheeled directly from the Generation Companies to wiling consumers who are ready to fully settle their bills. The willing consumers may include community and commercial clusters, industrial areas and hospitality sectors. Speaking on a Freedom Radio Phone in programme in Kano, the Minister of Power Engr Sale Mamman said, the policy was designed to save energy losses in the Power sector and assist Generation Companies who have not been getting the full payment for their generated power. The policy has already taken off as a pilot scheme in two states. The Minister revealed that DisCos have not been distributing all the power wheeled to them on the pretex that the consumers were unable to pay for the Power. This, he said necessitated the huge Federal government's ...

LESSON FROM LONDON BRIDGE STABBING

I was watching a recap of Met Police Commissioner Cressida Dick’s brief interview on the London Bridge stabbing some minutes ago and I gained the gusto to write this short piece, realizing that since the incident, she, Simon Steven who is head of the National Health Service and Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London are the only public office holders who have given elaborate public address on the issue. So why has PM Boris Johnson who tweeted to praise the commuters who held down the suspect before the arrival of police not said anything elaborate about it? Why has he not come to address the nation? Did the Queen not hear about it? Have you wondered why she hasn’t issued a statement yet? One thing I’ve noticed amongst others since I moved to the UK is that the people don’t blame everything on the Prime Minister. They hold other office holders accountable like the Mayor, in fact, especially the Mayor unlike back in Nigeria where we hold the President responsible for everything. In all candor t...

ANUNU EBE

Anunu ebe is a tree which grow in the bush far away from people’s homes. It has some medicinal value as some healers and medicine men make use of its leaves, roots or bark. Some of the Anunu ebe tree grow very big and spread their leaves so wide that they cast shadows around them. Trees around them do not spread their leaves in the same way. In other words, Anunu ebe tree turns to be a gigantic thing towering and above trees in the area. Often people describe the tree as a mystical plant that does not allow other plants to grow around it. Any birds that perch on its branch may die immediately. Its leaves never touches the ground, cobwebs are woven around its top where all dead leaves drop. Whatever is alive that comes in contact with the root dies off, that is why no other plant is seen around it. Herbalists that use the parts of Anunu ebe are known for charms and amulets. It is gotten by approaching the tree from a distance, live rooster is thrown at it after som...
